Vernonia

'Southern Cross'

hybrida

A favorite selection, this hybrid came from seed sown as Vernonia lettermanii. The other parent is unknown but it had broad foliage. 'Southern Cross' has intermediate foliage that measures up to a half-inch wide; it’s deep green and looks good all season long. Purple flowers emerge from deep purple buds that look like little jewels. Blooms can have thin white filaments along with lacy purple petals.

Vernonia 'Southern Cross' has a strong vase-shaped habit, held in place with thick stems that keep it tidy.
